The influence of preliminary soaking on glucose utilization by diaphragm.

چکیده
The isolated rat diaphragm has been used widely as a convenient tissue with which to study glucose utilization by muscle. Some data have been published on the influence of various extrinsic, non-hormonal factors on carbohydrate utilization by the diaphragm, such as substrate concentration, pH, and ionic environment (14). The principal effect to be discussed in this paper is the increase in glucose uptake which may be observed after various soaking procedures. As much as a 2-fold rise may occur as a result of soaking the diaphragm at a low temperature for a period of a few minutes prior to incubation. In our experience, this effect has not qualitatively altered certain well established hormonal influences but can obscure them if it is not appreciated. The time curves of glucose uptake and glycogen synthesis have also been studied and their relationship to the soaking phenomenon is discussed. In addition, a few observations are reported on the dependence of glucose uptake on the rate at which the diaphragm is shaken.

[Experimental studies on the role of pituitary hormones in carbohydrate metabolism].
The important role of the anterior and posterior pituitary glands in the carbohydrate metabolism has been the leading subject in the study of diabetes mellitus. The detail elucidation of the mechanism of its hormonal influences has been much discussed with respect to component individual pituitary hormone. The author has tried to clarify the situation by using Warburg's in vitro technique. The ...
متن کاملUtilization of date syrup as a substrate for carotenoid production by Rhodotorula glutinis
The potential use of date syrup, for the production of carotenoids by Rhodotorula glutinisin batch fermentation process, was investigated during 7 days. The results revealed that carbon (glucose or date syrup) and nitrogen sources [yeast extract, (NH4)2SO4 and NH4NO3] had a significant influence on biomass and carotenoid production. Maximum yield of total carotenoid production (7.94 mg/L) with ...
متن کاملInfluence of salicylic acid pre-treatment on emergence and early seedling growth of cucumber (Cucumis sativus)under salt stress
Salicylic acid (SA) is a common, plant-produced signal molecule that is responsible for inducing tolerance to a number of biotic and abiotic stresses. An experiment was therefore conducted to test whether the application of SA at various concentrations (0, 0.25, 0.50 or 1.0 mM) through a seed-soaking method would protect cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) seedlings subjected to salt stress. Aft...
متن کاملAcetoacetate and Glucose Uptake by Diaphragm and Skeletal Muscle from Control and Diabetic Rats*?
Many workers have demonstrated that extrahepatic tissues utilize ketone bodies in the absence of insulin (1). However, it has been postulated that a decrease in peripheral utilization of ketone bodies is a contributory factor in diabetic ketosis (2). No careful comparison of peripheral utilization by muscle from diabetic and nondiabetic preparations has been reported using modern techniques. Th...
متن کاملRate of Glucose Utilization by Blood Cells in Serum and Plasma Specimens With or Without Using Preservative
Objective: This study aims to estimate and compare the time-course change in blood glucose levels by blood cells in serum, and plasma with or without preservatives, which may reflect the rate of glucose utilization by blood cells. Method: This laboratory-based cross-sectional study was carried out using a blood specimen of 28 participants among which 14 were diagnosed with diabetes and 14 were...
